The destination

A park at the centre, community land all around.

Amboseli is the name most people give to the landscape around Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya, on the border with Tanzania and below Kilimanjaro. The park sits at its centre.

Much of the country around the park is Maasai community land, with sanctuaries and conservancies that have their own camps and rules. Some camps are inside the park and others are a short drive away, and we say which is which for every one.

What you can do depends on where you stay. Rules inside the national park and in the conservancies are different.

  1. Game drives in the park

Days in Amboseli National Park are spent on game drives on the park's roads, with birdwatching along the way. KWS lists more than 400 bird species.

  2. Walks in the conservancies

Several camps outside the park offer guided walks on their land, among them Angama Amboseli in Kimana Sanctuary and Elewana Tortilis Camp, which walks with local Maasai guides.

  3. Night drives outside the park

Some conservancy camps run night drives on their own land. Angama Amboseli lists night drives in Kimana Sanctuary, and Porini lists them in Selenkay Conservancy.

When to go

The safari region through the year.

December to March

A high season for wildlife viewing, according to KWS, with short grass and mostly sunny weather.

April to June

The long rains. KWS says animals can be harder to see and many park roads may need four-wheel drive.

July to December

The other high season in KWS guidance, with short grass that makes wildlife easier to see. Sightings are never guaranteed.
