Our story
Etana is the next chapter of a safari story that began in Nairobi in 1985.
A family legacy
Etana was born from a legacy that began with the founding of Safari Travel in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1985. What started as a family business built on a love for Africa has grown into a new chapter, one that carries forward the same values, relationships and commitment to exceptional journeys while looking toward the future.
At the heart of that beginning was Feeroz Jagani. After a career in the airline, hotel and tourism industries, he founded Safari Travel in Nairobi with a simple philosophy: welcome every guest as a friend, and reveal Africa with authenticity, integrity and genuine hospitality.
His greatest satisfaction came from seeing guests leave with a lasting connection to the people, landscapes and wildlife they had encountered.
Alongside him, Mony Jagani helped make Safari Travel an extension of the family. Her attention to detail, linguistic fluency and personal care helped guests feel welcomed, understood and looked after from the moment they arrived.
Many came to feel that travelling with the Jaganis was less like travelling with an operator and more like being welcomed into a family.
Together, Arefa and Shafiq have evolved the family business into Etana Safaris. The name is new; the founding philosophy remains: personal journeys, genuine hospitality and a deep connection to East Africa.

After completing a degree in Environmental Studies and gaining international corporate experience, Arefa returned to Kenya to lead the family's next chapter. Based in Nairobi, she oversees operations and partnerships, and brings the personal concierge care and eye for detail that every Etana journey receives.

Growing up within the family business, Shafiq developed a deep appreciation for East Africa and its wildlife, cultures and landscapes. While studying and building his career in Canada, he stayed closely connected to the business, returning regularly to Africa. Today he brings that experience together with a contemporary vision for private, individually crafted travel.
The finest safaris are built on trust, enduring relationships and an intimate knowledge of Africa earned over a lifetime.
How we travel
Over more than four decades, the family has built relationships with guides, conservancies, property owners and local communities across East Africa. These connections and local knowledge inform the care with which each journey is planned.
Every Etana safari is individually crafted around your interests, your pace and your hopes for the trip, never chosen from a set itinerary. Etana remains proudly family-owned. By working with a limited number of clients, the family gives each journey the time and personal attention it deserves.
