Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
A wildlife conservancy north of Mount Kenya, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and of one open landscape with Borana.
The destination
North of the mountain.
Lewa covers 62,000 acres on rolling plains north of Mount Kenya. UNESCO lists Lewa, with the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, as part of the Mount Kenya World Heritage Site.
The fence between Lewa and neighbouring Borana Conservancy has been taken down, so the two form one continuous landscape. They are still two separate conservancies, each with its own lodges.

On the conservancy
Ways to explore.
Photo: Elewana CollectionLodges arrange game drives, and the conservancy runs its own behind-the-scenes visits, booked through your lodge.
Game drives and sundowners
Lewa suggests warm clothes for evening drives and sundowners, followed by the night drive home.
Behind the scenes
Visits include the tracker dogs, the security operations room and the elephant underpass. Lewa says these fill up quickly.
Walk, ride and camp
Lewa Wilderness, one of the lodges, offers walking, riding and camping as well as drives.
When to go
The conservancy through the year.
Borana says its rains have usually come in March and April, as short, heavy showers. It adds that patterns are getting harder to predict.
Borana Lodge names these as favourite months, with clear, warm weather before the school holidays.
Borana's other usual rainy month, when storms can last longer, sometimes a whole day.
