The destination

One landscape, two conservancies.

Borana describes itself as a protected area on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya, just north of the equator on the Laikipia Plateau. It combines conservation with tourism, ranching and other enterprises.

Black rhino were brought to Borana in 2013. Later, the fence with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was dropped, forming what both call the Lewa-Borana landscape.

Borana Lodge lists a wide range of ways to get out on the conservancy.

  1. Horse riding

Borana keeps a stable of more than thirty horses, from gentle mounts for beginners to thoroughbreds for experienced riders.

  2. Rhino tracking

Listed among the conservation activities, alongside ranger deployments and training like a ranger.

  3. Walks, bikes and fly camping

Bush walks, mountain biking and e-biking, and fly camping are all on the activities list.

When to go

The conservancy through the year.

March to April

Borana says its rains have usually come in March and April, as short, heavy showers. It adds that patterns are getting harder to predict.

May, June and October

Borana Lodge names these as favourite months, with clear, warm weather before the school holidays.

November

Borana's other usual rainy month, when storms can last longer, sometimes a whole day.
