The destination

A sanctuary below the hills.

Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1970 and takes its name from the clusters of hills around it. It lies on the edge of Tsavo West National Park, and its own site describes it as a corridor for wildlife moving between Tsavo East and Tsavo West.

The land is a mix of riverine forest, savanna woodland and grassland. Salt Lick Safari Lodge stands in the sanctuary, and Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa is at its main entrance.

Early morning and late afternoon drives, with waterholes near the lodges for watching from your room.

  2. Walking safaris

Nature walks with an experienced ranger guide, looking at plants, animals and how they fit together.

  3. First World War history

A museum of pictures and artefacts at Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa is the starting point for battlefield tours.

When to go

The sanctuary through the year.

July to March

Kenya Wildlife Service calls this the high season and the best time for wildlife viewing, with sunny weather and shorter grass.

April to June

KWS says the long rains arrive in these months, and many park roads may need a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Any month

Weather varies from year to year and sightings are never guaranteed. We plan around the months you can travel.
