Shaba National Reserve
A reserve a few kilometres east of Buffalo Springs, on the southern bank of the Ewaso Nyiro.
The destination
Further east along the river.
Shaba National Reserve lies on the southern bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Isiolo County, about 9 km east of Buffalo Springs. It is managed by Isiolo County Government, not Kenya Wildlife Service.
The 2001 Key Biodiversity Area assessment describes it as a low-lying, semi-arid plain. It shares an ecosystem with Samburu and Buffalo Springs, and Ashnil Samburu Camp in Buffalo Springs lists it among the reserves its guests can reach.

Ways to explore.
Shaba is usually explored as part of a wider stay in the Samburu reserves.
Drives from neighbouring camps
Ashnil Samburu Camp, in Buffalo Springs, says its guests can reach Shaba as well as Buffalo Springs and Samburu.
Along the Ewaso Nyiro
Shaba follows the Ewaso Nyiro, the same river that runs between Samburu and Buffalo Springs, and lies in the same ecosystem.
Part of a wider journey
We plan Shaba as a day within a longer stay in the Samburu safari region, so you can see more than one reserve from one camp.
When to go
The reserve through the year.
A high season for wildlife viewing in KWS guidance. KWS describes the north of Kenya as hot and dry.
The long rains. KWS says park roads may need four-wheel drive.
The other high season in KWS guidance, when wildlife is easier to see. Sightings are never guaranteed.
