The destination

A third of the reserve.

The Mara Triangle is the north-western part of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, about a third of the whole reserve. The Oloololo Escarpment, the Mara River and the border with Tanzania give it its triangular shape.

Since 2001 the Triangle has been managed by the Mara Conservancy, a not-for-profit company, under an agreement now held by Narok County Government. It is part of the reserve, with its own gates and rules.

Ways to explore.

The Triangle is explored by vehicle. There are no walking safaris or night drives inside the reserve.

  1. Game drives

Early morning and late afternoon drives, or a full day out with a packed lunch. Staying inside the Triangle saves time driving in from outside.

  2. River crossings

In the migration season, Angama Safari Camp takes guests to the crossing sites on the Mara River. Timing varies, and crossings are never guaranteed.

  3. Hot-air ballooning

Balloon flights over the plains can be added to a stay at Angama Safari Camp.

When to go

The area through the year.

July to October

A Kenya Wildlife Service official says the wildebeest migration is on the Kenyan side in these months. Angama Safari Camp moves with it from July to September.

November to March

Kenya Wildlife Service counts July to March as high season, with sunny weather and short grass that makes animals easier to see.

April to June

The long rains usually fall now. Kenya Wildlife Service notes that some roads may need four-wheel drive.
