The destination

Conservancy and working ranch.

Loisaba is a wildlife conservancy and working ranch in northern Laikipia, between 1,400 and 2,000 metres above sea level. In 2014 The Nature Conservancy, with donors, helped transfer the land from private hands to the Loisaba Community Trust.

Stays are run with the Elewana Collection, including Loisaba Tented Camp on the edge of an escarpment and the Star Beds in the Eastern Valleys, overlooking the Kiboko Dam.

Ways to explore.

Loisaba says these are included in a game package stay at its lodges.

  1. Game drives and bush breakfasts

Guided drives, usually early morning or afternoon, with breakfast out in the bush on sunrise drives.

  2. On foot, horse or camel

Guided bush walks with a guide and ranger, horse riding for confirmed riders, and camel riding.

  3. Conservation and security

Limited spaces to join field teams on wildlife monitoring, or see the security team and tracker dogs at work.

When to go

The conservancy through the year.

July to March

The high season in KWS guidance for Kenya's parks, when shorter grass can make wildlife easier to see. Sightings are never guaranteed.

April to June

The long rains. KWS says most park roads may need four-wheel drive at this time.

All year

KWS describes Kenya's central highlands as cool and the north as hot and dry, so pack for warm days and cool evenings.
