About the camp

Above the Siana plains.

Mara Bushtops stands on the brow of a hill in the Mara Siana Conservancy, a few kilometres from the reserve’s Sekenani Gate. It is built around the old Cottar family home, which is now the dining room, and opened as Bushtops in 2007. Etana works with the camp and can include it in a journey you plan with us.

The tents are large, about 110 square metres, each on a raised deck with a hot tub, loungers and a telescope, and a butler on call. A family suite has two bedrooms either side of a shared lounge. Because the camp is on a conservancy rather than inside the reserve, guided walks and night drives are possible as well as game drives, and the reserve itself is close by.

What is offered can change with the season and the conservancy’s rules. We confirm the details when we plan your stay.

  1. Game drives

On the conservancy, away from the crowds, or through Sekenani Gate into the reserve for a full day with a picnic.

  2. On foot

Guided walks with an armed ranger, learning the tracks and smaller life of the plains.

  3. After dark

Night drives on the conservancy, looking for the animals that only come out once the sun has set.

  4. Meals in the bush

Breakfast laid out beneath a lone acacia, with the plains stretching away in every direction.

When to go

The camp through the year.

July to October

Usually the migration months on the Kenyan side, and the busiest time in the reserve. River crossings are never guaranteed.

April to June

The long rains. Some roads need four-wheel drive.

The rest of the year

Kenya Wildlife Service also names December to March as a high season. We help you choose the right months for what you hope to see.
