Chyulu Hills National Park
A national park in a range of volcanic hills, with montane forest, lava caves and the catchment that feeds Mzima Springs.
The destination
Green hills on old lava.
Chyulu Hills National Park is run by Kenya Wildlife Service and protects part of a volcanic range between the Tsavo and Amboseli landscapes. KWS describes dense montane forest in its western sector and a cave system that includes Leviathan Cave.
The hills are a water catchment for Mzima Springs in Tsavo West. Ol Donyo Lodge is in the Chyulu Hills, but on Mbirikani Ranch, which is Maasai-owned land and not part of the national park.

When to go
The park through the year.
Kenya Wildlife Service calls this the high season and the best time for wildlife viewing, with sunny weather and shorter grass.
KWS says the long rains arrive in these months, and many park roads may need a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Weather varies from year to year and sightings are never guaranteed. We plan around the months you can travel.
