The destination

The south-east corner of the Mara.

Olderkesi is a conservancy at the south-east corner of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, just north of the Serengeti in Tanzania. The land is owned by Maasai families and leased by Cottar's Safaris for conservation.

It sits beside the reserve but is a separate destination, with its own camp and its own rules. Cottar's describes it as part of a wildlife corridor between the reserve, the Serengeti and the Loita Hills.

July to October

A Kenya Wildlife Service official says the wildebeest migration is on the Kenyan side in these months. Timing varies from year to year, and sightings are never guaranteed.

November to March

Kenya Wildlife Service counts July to March as high season, with sunny weather and short grass that makes animals easier to see.

April to June

The long rains usually fall now. Kenya Wildlife Service notes that some roads may need four-wheel drive.
